AUTO SERVICE WORLDOctober 20, 2015

ANNOUNCING THE TIRE RECYCLING WORLD section at the 2016 North American Tire & Retread Expo

TIRE RECYCLING WORLDAugust 28, 2015

The North American Tire & Retread Expo at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center April 19-21, 2016 in New Orleans is pleased to announce the addition of the TIRE RECYCLING WORLD section at the 2016 expo on a permanent basis.

Tire recycling or rubber recycling are a challenge to the ecology. It is estimated that more than 300 million tires are discarded annually. More than half of used tires are consumed as secondary fuel in some industries like cement production. Reclaimed rubber is also used in various industries including shoe manufacturing, road paving and sports stadium ground fillers.

We hope that in this new section dedicated to TIRE RECYCLING at the North American Tire & Retread Expo allows companies in this field to present their technology and services to the visiting tire dealers and our tire industry.

Time to present Gus Lima, of RTA Member Latin Expo Group, our RTA Choice Award!

August 17, 2015

Treadsky awardOnce again, our good friend Rob Czukor of RTA member Tire Recycling Consultants has reminded us how valuable our members are, when he told us "I vote to give Gus Lima (at RTA Member Latin Expo Group) a Treadsky award for sponsoring retread tire expos that help promote the industry."

Rob originally suggested that when a member comes up with a spectacularly good idea benefiting the retread industry or the tire industry in general, RTA should be ready to give out an award of recognition.

Like an Emmy, Oscar, Tony, or the Truckers Tire Choice Award, we could call ours the RTA Choice Award, The Treadsky! Great idea Rob, and we agree that our second Treadsky should go to... Gus Lima.

Gus has spent a lot of time and money to promote and deliver quality tire and retread expos to the benefit of the industry and therefore he deserves a great deal of recognition for his efforts.

And we say, Thank you Gus!

Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau, David Stevens April 2015

TRIB recently attended the first North American Tire & Retread Expo held in New Orleans and we wanted to share our experiences from the show.

TRIB Wrap-up from North American Tire & Retread Expo

TRIB has worked for several years with Gus Lima and his fantastic team during the growth of their show in Panama -- the Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo. My experience with that show has demonstrated the commitment his team has in creating not only successful shows, but also shows that are fun for the attendees and exhibitors.

The show opened with a New Orleans brass band leading attendees onto the show floor where they found 112 exhibiting tire, tire retread, tire equipment, and tire repair companies. There were too many TRIB members exhibiting at the show to list here and I don't want to leave anyone off by providing a partial list, so I'll just say that there was a great selection of companies displaying machinery, products and services for the retread and repair industries. If you'd like to see a full list of exhibitors, please contact us.

TRIB Wrap-up from North American Tire & Retread Expo

While many exhibitors would rather have seen a flood of visitors to their booths instead of the floods of rain on the streets outside, overall they seemed happy about the quality of attendees they met and the opportunities to renew old connections and make some new ones. Officially there were 1,041 registered visitors in attendance and if the show in Panama is any guide, that number will continue to grow.

Several events were also held throughout the show to educate, inform and entertain visitors, including:

  • An Inaugural Party for all visitors and exhibitors at the House of Blues.
  • Training Sessions held throughout each day from B&J Rocket America, Central Marketing, Matteuzzi, Shamrock Marketing, and Tech International.
  • A morning of educational conferences, featuring six speakers from the tire industry, including TRIB. It was a great opportunity for us to educate visitors about all the work TRIB does to support our industry and the threats we currently face. We will gladly share our presentation with anyone that would like a copy.
  • A Miss Retread Beauty Contest in which 22 participants competed for cash prizes and for the title of Miss Retread 2015.
TRIB Wrap-up from North American Tire & Retread Expo

I'd like to thank and recognize all the participants in the Miss Retread contest. As I said at the time we announced the winners, it was an almost impossible task for me and my fellow judges to choose the winners. So many of the tires could have easily been in the top three and the choices we made hinged on the smallest of details. The winners of the contest were:

Industrias Del Neumaticos S.A.U. of Alicante, Spain, won first place and was awarded $5,000. The winning retread was a Hankook casing size 345/65R22.5 and Alphatread RTH-22 tread.

  • Allied Oil & Tire Company (Michelin Retread Technologies) of Omaha, Nebraska won second place and $2,500 with a Michelin North America casing size 445/50R 22.5 Custom Mold XTA.
  • TRIB Wrap-up from North American Tire & Retread Expo
Centre Techno Pneu, Inc. (associated with Borrachas Vipal S/A.), of Rimouski, Quebec, won third place and $1,000 with a Continental casing size 11R22.5, and a Vipal Rubber Corporation, VT 180 tread.

Congratulations to Gus and his team for a great start in launching the North American Tire & Retread Expo. I look forward to working with them on making the show bigger and better in 2016. If you're interested in the Latin American market, I would encourage you to attend their show in Panama -- the Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo. Learn more at www.latintyreexpo.com.

RTA NEWS YOU CAN USE

April 21, 2015

The following is a letter from me and it was not paid for by anyone, and no one has seen what follows until now.

I am writing to share my thoughts regarding the NORTH AMERICAN TIRE & RETREAD EXPO held in New Orleans last week. The Retread Tire Association (RTA) was an exhibitor and I attended along with Jeffrey Parks of RTA.

RTA News you can Use

To state that I was pleased with the EXPO would be a gross understatement. I have not had such a good time at a tire & retread conference since the old ARA shows at Louisville. Although I would have liked to have seen more attendees, which I am certain will happen next year, I have nothing but raves for the promoters and staff at the show. Three cheers for Gus Lima, Linda Bassitt and the rest of the folks who worked so hard to be certain that everyone received the very best service. They all did a great job to make all of us feel right at home!

Since I have been in the retread industry for nearly 40 years, as you can imagine I have attended many tire shows in the U.S. and in many other countries. Many of them have been great and this letter is not to take anything away from them, but I have NEVER been so impressed with the good service and full attention I received, as did all the other attendees, as I received last week in New Orleans.

Not only that, but the show was VERY productive for the Retread Tire Association! We came away with ten new members and a huge amount of good and helpful information, which will enable the Retread Tire Association to continue to be of great service to our present and future members!

My hope is that every reader of this memo will mark his or her calendar to attend the 2016 NORTH AMERICAN TIRE AND RETREAD EXPO in New Orleans! I promise that you will not be disappointed!

I will be happy to discuss the above with anyone who wants more information about why I was so pleased with the EXPO. I can be reached by telephone at 831-646-5269 or on my cell anytime at 831-917-6449.

Finally, you have my word of honor that I was not paid or otherwise compensated in any way by the promoters or anyone else to write the above.

They will be reading it for the first time, just as you are.

Sincerely and with best wishes,

HARVEY

Q&A: IndyCar driver Hélio Castroneves

by Matt Bemer, Tire Review - April 20, 2015

At the North American Tire & Retread Expo in New Orleans last week, Tire Review sat down with award-winning IndyCar racecar driver Hélio Castroneves. In addition to his many racing accomplishments, Castroneves competed in the reality TV show Dancing With the Stars, winning the competition with partner Julianne Hough in the show’s fifth season. Castroneves also participates in charity work.

IndyCar driver Hélio Castroneves

Castroneves was invited to the North American Tire & Retread Expo to sign autographs at the Firestone Racing Tires booth. Days before the expo, Castroneves placed second in the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana at the NOLA Motorsports Park.

Tire Review: You’ve worked with numerous charities over the years. Can you tell me a little bit about your passion for helping others?

Helio Castroneves:
For me, it’s the education. My parents were Catholic. In our minds and spirit-wise, charity is the right thing to do. Some people maybe don’t agree or believe it. But I believe it. You’re paying forward. It’s something that helps to clean your soul. That, for me, is the way to do it.

TR: How does your experience on Dancing With the Stars relate to racing?

HC: The focus, for sure. People don’t realize that, even if you’re dancing, it’s not about looking good and shake-shaking around. There actually is a specific technique. I was coached, so anything that you’re coached to do you must pay attention and be dedicated and work really hard. Those are the similarities.

In terms of feeling, it’s different because I have a car. I feel it when I go fast. And racing is all by myself. Dancing – I had to relate to my partner as well. But what impressed me was that when I put my mind in an uncomfortable territory, I proved to myself that I could do it. No matter what kind of work, as long as you put your mind and hard work into it, you can do it.

TR: How are the new IndyCar aerokits going to affect tire wear on the race course?

HC: Tires, for us, is a big part of racing because they are what is in contact with the track. It doesn’t matter how the car responds, the translation from the track to the car is in the tire.

Right now, the tire management has been better with the new aerokits. The numbers from downforce – to give an example, here in NOLA, we were about 5,000 lbs. of downforce. Last year, we were about 4,000 lbs. of downforce. So the numbers are astronomic. But when you say 1,000, people don’t realize that when you find a 100 pound difference that’s astronomic. So the scale from 4,000 to 5,000 is huge. That has an impact on the tires, on us physically and on the setup of the car because that represents about a second in what was last year’s time.

TR: What’s next? Are you looking at NASCAR at all? Are you going to continue with IndyCar?

HC: Soon I’ll be about 20 years in IndyCar racing. I keep asking veterans or people that are nearing retirement how they found out it was time. They all came to me with a very similar answer: I’m not having fun anymore. I don’t want to go through this anymore. I’m done. And, I cannot believe that. Sometimes I have bad days where I think that this is the time, but then I sleep on it and say this is what I like and enjoy. I still have the fire and I’m competitive and I’m having fun – that’s why I don’t see myself very soon doing something else.

I don’t think NASCAR is for me; however, I’ve never drove a NASCAR before. But, seeing my other friends try NASCAR and not succeed, I don’t see why I’m going to be the special one that does it and succeeds. But, I would love to try it – don’t get me wrong. In life, you have to try everything. I want to stay in IndyCar and have another ring on my finger here – or two more.

NORTH AMERICAN TIRE & RETREAD EXPO Details Announced

by Tire Review Staff - May 28, 2014

The Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo’s organizer will bring the Latin American show to the U.S. under the name “NORTH AMERICAN TIRE & RETREAD EXPO.” The event is scheduled for April 15-17, 2015, and will take place in New Orleans.

The announcement was made in Essen by Gustavo Lima, CEO of Oriente Triangle Group and the Latin Expo Group. The NORTH AMERICAN TIRE & RETREAD EXPO will be a “show and sell, not show and tell” trade show, according to the show’s website.

“[North America] is the largest tire market in the world, and we tire industry professionals do not have our own exclusive TIRE & RETREAD EXPO,” the site said. “Now at the NORTH AMERICAN TIRE & RETREAD EXPO we finally have our own TIRE & RETREAD EXPO, a place where we can all talk tires and only tires. Our goal is to bring together tire and retread business professionals together so that they can buy and sell to each other.”

The NORTH AMERICAN TIRE & RETREAD EXPO will be held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Admission to the expo will be free for all registered professional tire and retread dealers.
